STUDENTS MUST BE SMART TO USE SMARTPHONE IN SCHOOL
Dian Ariana Junaedi (AG.1)

Who does not know Iphone, Samsung, Sony, Nokia even Blackberry? Those brands of smartphone is now widely chosen by many people as a sophisticated device of communication. In modern era where the impact of globalization leads to the technological developments rapidly make significant progress in communication devices such as smartphones. Smartphone now has been owned by all people even the teenagers. So that, it is not the strange thing, if the teenagers have a smartphone. Smartphone for the teenagers is not longer a need for a secondary or tertiary, but prefer to the major or primary need.  Teenegers who should closely related with books in school, instead close with a smartphone. Now, the teenagers use smartphone in their daily lives, looks like they do not want to miss a single moment of time without a smartphone. Even in school especially at the classroom. The classroom where is the place that we can get knowledge , but they abuse it by using smartphone. Directly, this really impacts to the concentration of students in teaching and learning process. In a few words, using smartphone disturbs the concentration of student in learning process in school.
In the modern era, the development of smartphone rapidly is followed by features that are designed in a interisting way. Especially, the features or internet applications that make teenagers are addicted. With those sophisticated features such as a camera or games even internet applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Path, Instagram or Blackberry Messenger that automatically installed in the smartphone, they are not awkward again to bring the smartphone to school that will disturb the other students receive the lessons. Addictions is felt when their smartphone applications in internet provides new notifications that look fervently to be opened, readed and even replied. This makes the teenagers prefer to pay attention for their smartphone which is more attractive than teacher’s explanation about a boring subject. In addition, using smartphone in the classroom not only disturb the learning process of smartphone’s owner, but also will disturb the other students. It is caused of the potential of using smartphones carelessly in school. For instance, ringtones in the classroom with their variety of musical genres and styles that make some nosy and it may significantly disturb the education activities as planned by the teacher.
Using smartphone in schools can be used in various ways and situations. Besides its use is easy to connect to the Internet, the smartphone also gives negative effects to make it as a tool for cheating in the classroom. This may occur with the application of 'Message' on smartphone that allows it to send messages to other smartphones during the exam due to students can share their answer or the answers that have been prepared before. This is very avoidable and directly teach students to be dishonest in the exam and rely smartphone than learn by their own selves. Moreover, using smartphone makes the concentration of other students in answering the exam is interfered due to lighting and buttons on the smartphone is really noisy and it is not suitable with classroom that should be calm during the exam.
Some people may say that using smartphone at the classroom has benefits such as the smartphone will connect to the internet. It can make students actively open websites that related to the subject matter. This will expand their knowledge about a certain matter of discussion. This argument is supported entirely by Machado (2012) which states that the use of devices (mobile phone or smartphone) in schools in order to have a better development of the pedagogical actions. To a certain extent they are right because a new study has found less than 8 percents of students admit that they never use their smartphone or mobile phone for non-class purposes. So that means for 8 percents students they just use it for educational purposes in their class. However, that study also has found that more than 90 percents of students admit to use their smartphone or mobile phone for non-class activities during class time. This study is based on a survey of 777 students at six colleges and universities by Barney McCoy, associate professor of broadcasting at the University of Nebraska. For this research really shows that most of students just use their smartphone in a class room only for connect to the internet especially for visit the websites that not really related with their material in class.
Using smartphones in school especially for student must be emphasized well. It has bad impacts when is used for things that are very unrelated even useless for the subject matter that is taught by the teacher. Moreover, using smartphone will only disturb the concentration of learning process that should take precedence as a student. It is only an interruption in teaching and learning process and should not be created in the classroom. Exactly, using smartphone must be emphasized properly, especially for students. Be smart to use a smartphone!
